Jahnavi Kalvala (she/her)
Academic and Diversity in Surgery
Co-ordinator

Hi everyone! My name is Jahnavi and I’m a third-year medical student from Dubai. I’m super excited to be this year’s Academic and Diversity in Surgery Coordinator.

With a (much needed) growing emphasis on inclusion and diversity, I hope to spotlight doctors that our members can see themselves in and ensure that everyone in our community is well-represented. I’m excited to expand our most popular events to include more themes as well!

This role, previously known as the Women in Surgery Coordinator, now encompasses a much wider group of people that need more representation in this field. With this new change, I think it’s a great start to some much-needed conversations about diversity in the medical community, and a good reminder that we should continue to be drivers of change for the people that need it the most.

My hope for this year is to make our community more inclusive and representative, taking us a step closer to the change we need to see in this field.

Outside of Medicine, you’ll probably find me binge-watching a tv-show or doing some yoga!

Head of Skills

Hi everyone, my name's Nic.

I'm the new Head of Skills cell this year. I am super excited to meet you all online and hopefully in person in the near future! In my off time, you can find me cooking, playing badminton, piano, and practising my hand ties.

My job is to lead the wonderful Skills team in weekly teaching sessions and planning skills events. This year, we've got a lot of things in the pipeline, but my lips are sutured! Hopefully soon, we can put these plans into play and get you all excelling in surgical skills.

If you ever find me wandering the corridors of the hospital, feel free to come up and say hi! If not, don't hesitate to drop me a message or an email :)

I’m looking forward to teaching you lots of surgical skills and helping you feel more comfortable in theatre. Despite some of our teaching being online, we won’t let it stop you from enjoying our sessions.

If you have any questions or suggestions for how we can improve our teaching to suit you, please get in touch. If you see me around, come say hi!

This year I hope, as skills coordinator, to continue the amazing work SCRUBS has done over the last few years and teach as many students as possible and get them trained to the highest quality standard. In addition, we hope as a team to run more surgical events.

Head of Derby

Hey, I'm Paulina (she/her),

I’m very excited to be the Head of Derby for SCRUBS. Together with the Derby coordinators (Dan and Philip), we are looking to expand opportunities for medics at Derby - from providing high-yield revision sessions and talks from specialities that you’re interested in, to hopefully some suturing sessions too!

I chose to be a part of the committee as I’m interested in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, so feel free to drop me a message if you’d like any specific teaching, events or advice!

Outside of SCRUBS I love going to festivals, playing badminton and going gym.

Phil Spani-Orchin (he/him)
Derby Co-ordinator

Hi all, I'm one of the Derby coordinators this year and really looking forward to having in-person sessions and more events with the Nottingham site.

I work with Dan and Paulina to help deliver fantastic events at the Derby site and promote and encourage interest in surgical careers and skills. I think regardless of what sort of doctor you want to be, surgical skills are an essential (and dare I say fun) challenge we can all improve.

I'm sure I've met most of you, and you'll know about my love of anything neuroscience/surgical. But if we haven't, don't hesitate to stop and chat with me.

Outside of SCRUBS and medicine, you'll find me in restaurants, playing the piano or trying to make the cost of my motorsport race licence worth it!

I am one of the SCRUBS Derby Coordinators this year and am super excited to help organise some exam revision sessions and surgical career talks this year for the medic cohorts based in Derby.

I have a keen interest in Trauma and Orthopaedics, so look out for me at the SCRUBS Trauma day later in the year! Dm me anytime if you want anything specific organised or have any questions!

Outside of medicine, you will find me buying an unhealthy amount of houseplants for my ever-growing collection or eating out trying to find the best cheesecake in the area!

Arfaa Butt (she/her)
Head of Anatomy

Hi, I’m Arfaa, and I’m the Head of Anatomy for this year. This is my second year on the committee, having previously been an Anatomy Coordinator, so I’m excited to continue working in such a brilliant society.

Outside of SCRUBS, you’ll find me rehearsing with Musicality/A Cappella, starting far too many projects, or having a natter with someone when I probably (definitely) should be doing work…

My role this year involves managing the Anatomy Coordinators and weekly anatomy teaching sessions to make sure everything runs smoothly. I’m also responsible for organising mock spotter exams, revision sessions and some of the exciting lecture series that SCRUBS deliver every year.

I’m looking forward to getting back to in-person events so if you’ve any suggestions (or just want to stop and chat!) feel free to get in touch

Kirsten Heri (she/her)
Anatomy Co-ordinator

Hey everyone! My name is Kirsten and I am super excited to be one of the anatomy coordinators this year. I chose the role mainly because of my love for teaching and the love-hate relationship I have with anatomy (don't we all *sigh*).

The role of anatomy coordinator primarily involves preparing the content for and organizing anatomy teaching sessions for Year 1 and Year 2 students. We cover everything from osteology to surface anatomy to scans and general anatomy. We also conduct monthly anatomy recap quizzes and closer to exams, we are responsible for carrying out mock spotter exams to help you with OSPE Preparations.

Outside of medicine, I have a strong passion for music be it singing or playing the piano. I am looking forward to hopefully being able to move SCRUBS Teaching Sessions in person so that I can get to know more of you and vice versa!

Feel free to message me if you have any questions about anatomy or if you just want to chat!
